Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Bunny D.

Born on Easter morning at Morton Plant Hospital, Bunny embraced her life-long nickname and so has the Dunedin community. As part of Dunedin High School’s first graduating class in 1962, she formed a lasting connection to North Pinellas County.

While her friends aspired to be teachers, Bunny always felt a strong pull toward medicine. She attended nursing school for a year upstate but returned to Dunedin after marrying her first husband. Yet, her passion for healthcare remained, leading her to her true calling.

“I’ve always wanted to work in medicine. I thought a hospital would be fascinating, and I’ve never regretted that desire,” Bunny recalls. A friend connected her with Dr. Irwin Entel, a new radiologist at Mease Hospital, who was starting an X-ray certification program. Inspired by her friend’s success, Bunny enrolled.

After completing the program, she began her career as an X-ray technologist, spending 47 years at Mease Hospital and volunteering on Tuesday mornings with us at the Clearwater Free Clinic.

Bunny has volunteered at the Clinic for about six years. “I would drive by and think it would be interesting to work there, so one day, I just went in and said I’d like to volunteer,” she explains. Her expertise and welcoming demeanor create a warm environment for patients and staff alike.

Bunny is also a devoted mother of three daughters and grandmother of seven. Her community service also includes volunteering at her church, the Code Enforcement Board, and acts as the President of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for the City of Dunedin. In recognition of her efforts, Bunny was honored as one of Dunedin’s 2024 Senior Citizens of the Year.
