Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Jack G.
Barry, that's crazy. I don’t have a medical background.
Jack is a dedicated front desk volunteer at the Clearwater Free Clinic. For over seven years, Jack has been a pillar of reliability and efficiency, ensuring that each Wednesday afternoon runs smoothly for both patients and staff. His unwavering commitment and attention to detail make him an invaluable member of our team.
Originally hailing from the northside of Chicago, Jack moved to Clearwater in 1979 where he focused on his career in marine construction and project management involving pipelines and ports. In 2017, Jack was introduced to the Clinic by a friend, Barry, who was an intake volunteer. Jack was planning to cut back on his work hours and mentioned he wanted something to do in his free time. Barry suggested he volunteer at the Clearwater Free Clinic. Jack's initial reaction was "Barry, that's crazy. I don’t have a medical background." But Barry reassured Jack that they would find a suitable role for him despite his lack of a medical background and continued encouraging him to volunteer. Although Jack was initially hesitant, after some convincing he decided to give it a try.
Jack likes to come in early to review paperwork and the schedule. This allows him to identify new patients who may need more guidance during check-in and to be aware of any acute visits. He has learned to become better at asking questions, emphasizing the importance of getting a good understanding to relay accurate information to the right person or provider. His efforts ensure that patients receive timely responses and support. Jack's goal is to make the patient's experience as positive as possible, understanding that many patients are not having their best day. He believes he has become a good listener through this role. His fierce commitment to the Clinic earned Jack the Clearwater Free Clinic’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2018.
Make every day a learning experience
Additionally, Jack’s dedication to our patients extends to his own learning; he made it a point to educate himself about the clinic’s operations and common prescriptions and recommends new or future volunteers "Make every day a learning experience." After his first several months of shifts, when he got home, Jack researched nearly 40 of the most common prescriptions filled at the Clinic and what they did to better assist patients and understand their needs.
Jack’s contributions to Clearwater Free Clinic are immeasurable. His attention to detail, organizational skills, and heartfelt stories inspires both staff and patients alike. We are deeply grateful for his years of service and dedication. Volunteers like Jack are the heart of our clinic!
